Can Amazon Seller Accounts be Transferred?

Let's say that you are selling (or buying) a business, and in addition to a website, the business also has an Amazon Marketplace store, which not only generates a decent number of daily transactions, but also has thousands of feedbacks (also referred to as ratings), mostly positive, of course.

Can that account be transferred to the new owner?

Yes!
You can go through the regular Amazon channels in order to "officially" request an account transfer, or you may want to follow the "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission" approach.

From comments I've heard, requesting a transfer can, sometimes, be slow and problematic, so when I sold my business I chose the second approach, and I am glad I did.

Actually, it was a painless process, and although you will need to contact Amazon in order to input the new owner's tax number and other pertinent information, my approach allowed for a swift transfer.


Here's what I did...

After closing the sale of the biz, I gave the new owner the password to my Amazon account. With that out of the way, we started updating the account's profile by entering the new corporate name, address, phone numbers, tax info, and other pertinent data.

From start to finish I would say the process took approximately four or five hours spread over a couple of days, and once we felt confident that everything was updated, I told the new owner to change the password so he'd be the only one with access to the account.

That was it!

Keep in mind that by transferring your account in this fashion you not only give the new owner the ratings you've accumulated over the years, which I think it was the right thing to do since he was purchasing my business. But along with that I also gave up all my history as an Amazon customer which was a tad painful.

Of course ratings can make an Amazon store look even more attractive to a buyer, and the more feedbacks you have, the more valuable it is, so that alone can become a deal breaker for most buyers. In other words, they will want to have those ratings, just like they will also want to have your customer email list.

At the end of the day, your good reputation is an asset, and in this case, one that can be transferred fairly easy.

By the way, a similar approach can be used for an eBay store, but understand that you will have to contact customer support in order to make the necessary changes.
